Criminal Defense

We handle all local and state misdemeanor and felony charges in Virginia and West Virginia. We do not handle any federal charges, or any charges in Bland County, VA, where Charlie serves as an assisting Commonwealth / Prosecuting Attorney.

A criminal defense attorney is a legal professional who focuses on defending individuals and organizations charged with criminal conduct. Their primary role is to ensure that their clients receive a fair trial and that their rights are protected throughout the legal process.

I'm Charged with a Crime, Now What?

If you’re arrested or charged with a crime, the law gives you important rights. These rights come from the U.S. Constitution and state laws — and they protect you.

You have the right to:

  • Remain silent and not say anything that could be used against you

  • Have a lawyer, even if you can’t afford one

  • Get a fair trial and be presumed innocent unless proven guilty

The system isn’t always fair — but we’ll make sure your rights are protected.

What We Can Do to Help

Facing a criminal charge can feel overwhelming — but you don’t have to face it alone. A defense lawyer can help you:

  • Fight the charges or work to get them reduced or dismissed

  • Protect your record, your job, and your freedom

  • Negotiate plea deals when it’s in your best interest

  • Go to trial and defend you in court if needed

No matter the charge, we’re here to help you get the best possible outcome.

Types Of Criminal Cases

Criminal charges come in all shapes and sizes. Here are some examples.

We can challenge the stop, the test results, and help you keep your license and protect your future.

DUI / DWI

Charged with Drunk or Drugged Driving?

Example:

You were pulled over after a night out, blew over the limit, and now face a DUI charge. You’re worried about losing your license and job.

We’ll look at whether the search was legal and fight to reduce or dismiss the charges.

Drug Charges

Facing Drug Possession or Distribution?

Example:

Police searched your car during a traffic stop and found a small amount of drugs. Now you’re charged with possession — or worse, intent to sell.

Even minor theft charges can hurt your record — we can help you fight back or keep it off your record.

Theft or Shoplifting

Accused of Stealing?

Example:

You were caught on camera taking items from a store, or you’re being blamed for something that went missing at work.

These cases often come down to your side vs. theirs — we’ll make sure your voice is heard.

Assault or Domestic Violence

Involved in a Fight or Domestic Dispute?

Example:

An argument with a partner or someone at a bar got physical. Now you’re facing assault or domestic violence charges.

Gun laws are complex — we’ll help protect your rights and avoid harsh penalties.

Gun or Weapons Charges

Caught with a Weapon?

Example:

You were pulled over and had a firearm in the car — maybe without a permit, or in a restricted area. Now you’re facing serious charges.

We can help fix the issue before it gets worse and work to keep you out of custody.

Probation Violations or Bench Warrants

Missed Court or Broke Probation Rules?

Example:

You missed a court date or failed a drug test while on probation — now there’s a warrant out, or you're facing jail time.
